Coral, ochre, and pale gray washes fill the boroughs beneath a delicate white street network. Charcoal blue water defines the shorelines and spreads into a broad, uneven field below the city. Soft edges and translucent color allow the painted surface to show through the geographic outline. The contrast between the precise streets and the shifting washes gives the map a quiet tension, keeping both neighborhood detail and the city's divided geography in view.
The city beneath the stories
A painted map served as the navigation surface for The Distance From Here, connecting its four original oil paintings to the geography of traffic violence. These artist-selected map prints extend that work into a series on paper.
