Victor was 24, a delivery worker supporting his young son in Mexico. His aunt Tomasa remembered his kindness, playfulness, and hope of finishing school.[1]

Elegist: Victor Hidalgo worked for a pharmacy delivery company. He was twenty-four.

Sociologist: He lived in the Bronx. His wife and their one-year-old son lived in Guerrero, Mexico.

Elegist: His aunt Tomasa worried about him on these streets.

Sociologist: On October 30, 2024, an FDNY pickup driver responding to an emergency hit Victor as he rode his e-bike at Fourth Avenue and Sackett Street. Victor died at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.

Elegist: Tomasa said, “I wish he had a better life with safer work.”

On October 30, 2024, an FDNY pickup driver responding to an emergency struck him at Fourth Avenue and Sackett Street. Victor was taken to the hospital, where he died.[2]

The truck nearly fills an eighteen-inch square. Its grille confronts us head-on, while the bicycle and rider break into circles and fragments below. The difference in scale is felt before the crash is explained.

Red gives the vehicle its mass. Blue, yellow, and white pull through its edges, keeping the surface unsettled. The painting compresses a vehicle, a rider, and the pressure between them into one encounter.

258 feet in a straight line from Littlefield to Fourth Avenue and Sackett Street. The title brings the loss into the gallery’s immediate neighborhood.[3]

“In this case, it was a Victor Hidalgo for my first painting. He was a delivery person on the way, I imagined, to make a delivery, and was hit by an emergency vehicle. But we don’t really know that much, and I feel like a painting gives you the ability to kind of communicate more than the obvious facts. And it’s a large vehicle that kind of dwarfs the cyclist. And that’s one of the things I really wanted to capture.”
