This is a quick pen and ink and gouache drawing of journalist Clive Thompson. Clive, an avid cyclist and writer who is working on a book on cycling, posed for me with his bicycle. Here he holds the bike up.
This style of drawing is one I'm really enjoying. The lines and the colors play off each other, and are all done quickly to create a sense of motion and thought.
This is one of the many preparatory drawings for a monumental portrait painting that I'm working on. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to use this composition for the final painting.
The pose communicates toughness; though there's this sense in America that real men drive trucks, in reality, biking the streets of the USA is a much more courageous act.
