I've been working on a series of butterfly paintings, and to get in the mood, I did a number of gesture sketches. This one came out particularly nice, with the butterfly about to land on a Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia rotundifolia), looking to lap up some sweet nectar. I studied calligraphy in Japan many years ago, and I've been going back to my roots, fooling with a brush pen, working quickly, and making many versions until I get it right.
The original drawing is 7.5" x 7.5" brush pen and ink on paper and is in my sketchbook. The print is faithful to the original drawing, so faithful that you can see hints of the other drawings on the other side of the paper. It's printed on beautiful Hahnemuhle German Etching all cotton paper using archival ink on an 11" x 8.5" paper. Just buy a cheap standard frame and you're ready to go!
