In New York, you used to see these all the time.
The common garden spider used to be, well, common. But we're not seeing Argiope aurantia as often as we used to.
These guys are disappearing.
From the 1970's to today, some spider populations have dropped 140 to 1. So it's no accident that you aren't seeing spiders around like you used to. They're disappearing.
This drawing was done as part of a quick series about spiders and climate change for Halloween. The actual drawing is 6" x 9" and I print them on 11" x 8.5" paper so they're easy to frame and there's a nice border around it.
