I Saw “For Colored Girls” at the Booth Theater

My friends’ daughter, Amara Granderson, was in it as the Lady and Orange, and so I had to go. The performance that I saw was directed and choreographed by Camille Brown and the production was stunning. I wasn’t familiar with the play, and I found it incredibly moving. Each character is heroic in her own way, and they tell stories of survival and overcoming, of growth and disaster.

The Cast are Ladies in the Colors of the Rainbow.

I thought about drawing all of the cast members, but I really wanted to have enough detail to show each of their faces. I always like the challenge of depicting colorful things only using sumi ink. The three characters depicted are the Lady in Red (played by Kenita Miller), the Lady in Green (Played by Okwui Oxpokwasili), and the Lady in Orange.

When a character would give a monologue to the audience (in this case, the Lady in Orange) the rest of the characters would dance in the background like a Greek chorus in motion. Here the Lady in Red and the Lady in Green (and the rest of the cast) are reacting to the Lady in Orange’s story.

The Prints are Gorgeous

The prints are beautiful accurate representations of the original (which is 13" x 17"). They are printed on 17" x 22" archival Hahnemuhle German Etching paper with a 1.5" border on the sides and 2.5" borders on the top and the bottom.
